Wimbledon 2022: Ranking the 5 best matches ever at the All England Club

Over the years, Wimbledon has served up some epic matches. 

From Andy Murray’s famous triumph over Novak Djokovic in 2013, to Serena Williams’ victory over her sister, Venus, in 2002. 

Ahead of this year’s tournament, which gets underway in less than a fortnight, we’ve decided to look back on some of the competition’s most memorable contests. 

With that in mind, we’ve ranked our top five matches ever at the All England Club: 

Admittedly, this game was far from a breathtaking game of tennis, but it does win the award for the longest Grand Slam match in tennis history –– by quite some distance as well. 

The big-serving Isner faced off against French star Mahut in the first round of the 2010 men’s singles draw. 

Remarkably, the match was played over the course of three days, with Isner winning the fifth and final set 70-68. 

Isner then went on to lose his second-round match to Thiemo de Bakker in straight sets and required medical treatment for neck and shoulder problems. 

Navratilova was a six-time defending champion heading into 1988, but the emerging Graf had started to dominate the women’s circuit. 

Graf had won both the Australian Open and the French Open heading into Wimbledon and was considered the only player who could end Navratilova’s dominance. 

The German youngster faced Navratilova in the final and recovered from a set down to clinch the next two 6-2 6-1. 

Graf went on to become the only player in history to win the Golden Slam, which consists of all four majors and the Olympics in the same year. 

Between 2014 and 2019, Federer and Djokovic contested three finals at Wimbledon and all of them proved to be spectacular viewing.
