Why Thomas Tuchel 'rejected' Manchester United job amid new Erik ten Hag pressure

Thomas Tuchel reportedly turned down the chance to manage Manchester United in the summer, due to disagreements over the club's transfer policy.

The German tactician reportedly had discussions with Sir Jim Ratcliffe about potentially taking over at Old Trafford, even as United were still deliberating Erik ten Hag's future. After concluding his stint with Bayern Munich in the 2023/24 season, Tuchel is currently without a managerial post.

Despite being a strong candidate, the ex-Chelsea manager chose to withdraw from the running. While it was rumoured that the 51-year-old was considering a sabbatical from football, concerns about a Premier League comeback and what was being proposed seem to have played a part in his decision.

With United securing FA Cup success but only managing an eighth-place league finish, there was significant speculation regarding the team's prospects. The club was also in the process of establishing a new football structure with Omar Berrada and sporting director Dan Ashworth, though Ashworth's compensation agreement with Newcastle was still pending at the time.

According to Bild, via the Mirror, Tuchel had reservations about Manchester United's approach to transfers. Although he was on the brink of accepting the position, the club's framework ultimately deterred him.

German commentator Marcel Reif shared with the publication: "I would have bet a lot that Tuchel would replace Ten Hag. I recently had another conversation with someone who is very close to that. It was pretty far along, almost in agreement.
