Why The Umbrella Academy on Netflix is ending with season 4

The Umbrella Academy has returned for its fourth and final season, much to the dismay of its dedicated fanbase.

Since its 2019 debut, the Netflix hit The Umbrella Academy, adapted from Gerald Way's comic book series, has garnered a devoted following.

After a two-year hiatus, the eagerly anticipated fourth series has arrived on Netflix, but its release is tinged with sadness. It was previously revealed that the show would conclude after this six-episode season, a departure from its standard 10-episode format.

Despite the disappointment of seeing The Umbrella Academy come to an end while still enjoying popularity, showrunner Steve Blackman has stated that this conclusion was intentional from the start.

He envisioned the series' finale early on, which meant, to the chagrin of fans, that it would culminate with its fourth season.

In an interview with SFX magazine, Blackman referred to the last series as a "natural ending" for The Umbrella Academy.

He said: "I knew how I wanted to end the show from [the] very beginning."

"We wanted to explain the Jennifer Incident, and to talk about [Sir Reginald] Hargreeves's origins. There will still be mysteries left, but I think the bigger ones are solved."

In the final season, the mystery surrounding Ben Hargreeves's (portrayed by Justin H Min) death is resolved, revealing that Reginald Hargreeves (Colm Feore) was responsible for his demise, along with details about Jennifer (Victoria Sawal).

The growing closeness between the two characters, who harboured the potent elements of durango and marigold within them, was becoming a threat to global safety. This led Reginald to take drastic action by ending their lives.
