Why Michael Olise summer decision could be bad news for Manchester United transfer plans

Michael Olise was Manchester United's tormentor in-chief a month ago, running riot at Selhurst Park as Crystal Palace inflicted a bruising 4-0 defeat on Erik ten Hag's side.

Since then (and for a few weeks before in fact) Olise has been heavily touted for a move to Old Trafford this summer. The London-born forward signed a new four-year contract amid interest from Chelsea last summer, but could still be sold for the right price in the coming months.

It is somewhat ironic that a former United tormentor, Thierry Henry – who played in a similar style to Olise – has thrown a potential spanner in the works. Around the same time that Olise signed an extension at Palace, the former Arsenal striker was appointed as the new manager of France's Under-21 side, with it agreed that Henry would also lead a French Under-23s team at this summer's Olympic Games in Paris.

Henry has now named Olise, who qualifies for France as well as England, in his preliminary 24-man squad for the Olympics, with France set to play group games on July 24, 27 and 30. Others in the squad include Olise's Palace teammate Jean-Philippe Mateta, Bayern Munich prodigy Mathys Tel and Chelsea youngster Lesley Ugochukwu.

The men's Olympic football final is not until August 9, so if France go all the way, Olise would likely miss the start of the Premier League season and play no part in pre-season whatsoever.
