Why Manchester United vs Newcastle United is not being shown on live TV in the UK

Manchester United host Newcastle United at Old Trafford in the Premier League on Sunday afternoon, but the game will not be shown on live TV in the UK.

Erik ten Hag's men come into the match having secured a 2-1 victory over Everton in their last top-flight outing, with Cristiano Ronaldo coming off the bench to score the winner against Frank Lampard's side after Antony had levelled proceedings. The Reds were also victorious in the Europa League in midweek after scoring in added time to defeat Cypriot outfit Omonia Nicosia 1-0 thanks to Scott McTominay's late strike.

With United being in action on Thursday, their Premier League clash against Newcastle was moved to Sunday, October 16. This is because there is a requirement for there to be at least 48 hours between two matches, regardless of the competition.

Given that it is unheard of for a top-flight English clash to kick-off at 8pm on a Saturday night, the Reds' game against the Magpies was scheduled for Sunday instead.

However, while the match will kick-off at 2pm, it will not be shown on live TV, despite it taking place in one of Sky Sports' Super Sunday slots. This is because Aston Villa against Chelsea had already been selected for television coverage.

United's rivals Manchester City travel to Merseyside to face off against Liverpool in the 4:30pm match, with Pep Guardiola's side looking to close the gap on current league-leaders Arsenal.

The next time the Reds will play in front of the camera is when they welcome Tottenham Hotspur to Old Trafford on Wednesday night. The game will be available to watch on Amazon Prime.
