Why Liverpool’s transfer deadline day move for Fabio Carvalho collapsed
Liverpool’s move for Fulham youngster Fabio Carvalho collapsed just moments before the January transfer window slammed shut.
The two clubs had been involved in negotiations over the course of the last 48 hours and the Reds believed they had made a breakthrough when a fee, in the region of £5million had reportedly been agreed earlier on Monday.
Any deal from Fulham’s perspective, however, was dependent on the 20-year-old being loaned back to them for the remainder of the season.
Liverpool were reluctant to agree to that demand and has talks dragged on the Premier League club were unable to submit a completed deal sheet before the 11.00pm deadline.
Carvalho, who has scored eight goals in 23 appearances for a Fulham side which looks well placed to make an instant return to top flight, is out of contract in the summer when Liverpool are likely to launch a fresh attempt to sign him on a free transfer.

The Portugal-born England youth international is said to be keen to work with Jurgen Klopp, but that ambition will now have to wait until next season at the earliest.
Liverpool were able to wrap up the signing of Luis Diaz from Porto in a £37.5million deal over the weekend and will be hoping the Portugal international will be able to make his debut in this weekend’s FA Cup tie against Cardiff.
The Reds were also able to resist offers for back-up forwards Takumi Minamino and Divock Origi, while their squad will be boosted further by the return to full fitness of Harvey Elliott.
