Why Jurgen Klopp did not celebrate at full-time after Liverpool's 7-0 win vs Manchester United

Jamie Carragher has suggested that Jurgen Klopp refrained from doing his trademark fist-pump celebration towards the Kop after Liverpool’s 7-0 dismantling of Manchester United to avoid “rubbing it in”.

Six second-half goals left the visitors stunned as they succumbed to their heaviest-ever defeat to Liverpool and biggest loss since 1931. It was the first time in 28 games that United had failed to find the net as the hosts pinned them in their own half for the final 45 minutes.

With Anfield jubilant, the Kop was baying for Klopp to produce his trademark celebration after full-time. However, the German refused and instead gave a circular motion with his arm to gesture that the side needs to keep going after an underwhelming season.

Liverpool, now fifth, are seven points behind United in the table having won three fewer Premier League matches this season. Speaking on Sky Sports after the game, Carragher mooted that part of the reason Klopp opted against producing the fist pumps was to avoid gloating about the result amid the overall respective form of the two clubs.

He said: “When you win by a shock scoreline it almost knocks a bit of the celebration because Manchester United become the story more. Klopp didn’t fist-pump the Kop as you’d expect because I think of the scoreline and it feels like you’re rubbing it in, in some ways.

“It gives Liverpool a huge fillip in terms of getting in the top four. It’s really important that in terms of what they could do in the summer financially and maybe a player they could bring in.”

United face Real Betis in the first leg of their Europa League last-16 clash on Thursday before hosting second-bottom Southampton on Sunday.
