The Ikoyi Ladies Golf Club is redefining its golfing culture by integrating environmental sustainability, biodiversity conservation, and social impact into its core values, the club’s new lady captain, Peggy Onwu, has said.
Speaking while unveiling her “Transformative Vision” at her inaugural address at the weekend, Onwu said her plans go beyond the game to benefit both the environment and the community.
With the theme “Go Beyond, Reach It, Live It, Play It,” Onwu emphasised the need for golfers to take responsibility for their surroundings and contribute to ecological preservation.
She said her leadership comes with a commitment to biodiversity preservation and sustainable living, ensuring that the club’s beautiful green expanse serves not only as a sporting hub but also as an ecological sanctuary.
She highlighted specific initiatives, including the cleaning and preservation of lakes, ensuring that fish and birds within the golf course’s ecosystem thrive in a healthy habitat.
Onwu also announced plans to create hydration centres to reduce plastic waste, promote recycling, and encourage responsible water consumption among members.
In addition to environmental efforts, Onwu is spearheading programmes that will support women in sustainable enterprises and create economic opportunities.
One of the proposed initiatives involves collecting seeds from trees on the golf course and providing them to women entrepreneurs, who can process them into oils for commercial use.
She said the club is also committed to mentoring and upskilling golf caddies, many of whom aspire to become professional golfers or administrators in the sport.
