Why Everton were docked points for FFP breach as Man City await Premier League decision

As the Premier League returns this weekend, the conversation surrounding Financial Fair Play (FFP) in the top flight will rumble on after Everton were docked ten points.

The Toffees supporters will be protesting on Sunday when their side take on Manchester United at Goodison Park. Sean Dyche's men intend to appeal the decision made by the Premier League but in the meantime, they sit languishing in the relegation zone.

One interested observer in the Everton fiasco is Manchester City who currently find themselves being investigated by the Premier League for 115 alleged FFP breaches. If found guilty, the Blues could receive a punishment which is greater than the one dished out to the Merseyside club.

Amidst the conversation surrounding FFP, MEN Sport has taken a look at why Everton were docked ten points by the Premier League.

Everton were referred to an independent panel in March 2023 after it became clear they may have broken the Premier League's profit and sustainability rules. From 2018 to 2021, Everton posted losses of £372m, well over the £250m allowed every three years.

In a five-day hearing, the panel found the Toffees had made a loss of £124.5m for the relevant period which is more than the £105m permitted. Therefore, the top flight decided to immediately dock ten points from the club.
