Why Cristiano Ronaldo isn't in the Manchester United team vs Leicester City

Cristiano Ronaldo is not in the Manchester United squad to face Leicester City as he is unwell.

The 37-year-old forward played two full games for Portugal during the international break and was at Carrington on Thursday and Friday, but as the Manchester Evening News reported he did not arrive with the rest of the squad at the Lowry on Friday.

It is understood that illness is the reason Ronaldo is not in the squad to face the Foxes in a vital Premier League game.

Ronaldo has missed two Premier League games with a hip flexor injury since the start of 2022 and this will be his third enforced absence from a matchday squad in 2022.

His absence further complicates Ralf Rangnick's plans, with Edinson Cavani also out after picking up an injury while on international duty with Uruguay, with the 35-year-old potentially set for a long absence.

That leaves Jadon Sancho, Anthony Elanga and Marcus Rashford as the only attacking players in the United squad to face Leicester.

Raphael Varane and Paul Pogba both make the squad after both suffering slight injury scares while away on international duty with France.

After today United aren't in action until next Saturday when they face Everton, so Rangnick will be hoping Ronaldo has recovered by then.
