When thunderstorms are expected to hit Greater Manchester today as further weather warnings issued

A yellow weather warning for thunderstorms remains in place across Greater Manchester today.

The warning is in place from midday until 9pm tonight and covers Greater Manchester and the rest of the north west. A new weather warning has been issued for the start of next week too, with the possibility of heavy rain hitting Greater Manchester on Monday.

Giving details of today's weather warning, the Met Office said: "High temperatures on Sunday will trigger showers and thunderstorms across the warning area, some of which are likely to be torrential , perhaps bringing a few places 30-40 mm in an hour. The odd place, affected by multiple showers, could see more than this, perhaps in excess of 60 mm in a few hours, most likely across Wales and central England.

"As well as rain, additional hazards will be hail, strong gusts of wind, and lightning. Despite this, some places in the warning area will remain dry, or see only small amounts of rain, due to the scattered nature of the heaviest showers."

They add that there is a small chance that "homes and businesses could be flood quickly" and that the torrential rain could lead to "difficult" driving conditions and road closures.

The forecast around Greater Manchester is mixed, with some areas predicted to be hit by thunderstorms while others will miss them. Temperatures are expected to reach highs of 28oC with overcast conditions for much of the day across the region.

The areas that are predicted to be hit by a thunderstorm later this afternoon - including Heaton Park where day two of Parklife Festival is taking place - are forecast to be hit around 3pm.
