When and where Northern Lights will be visible in the UK tonight

The Northern Lights have dazzled over parts of Scotland this week. Now, updated space weather forecasts say more could be on the way.

The Met Office has said ongoing fast solar winds could bring a chance of a visible aurora borealis display to northern parts of the UK on Valentine's Day.

The weather agency predicted parts of the UK had a "90 per cent chance" of seeing a Northern Lights display this week. Some lucky regions could also get a glimpse of the aurora tonight.

The Met Office said today (February 14): "Periods of enhanced aurora are possible due to ongoing fast solar winds, most likely early Friday or overnight Friday into Saturday. This brings a chance of visible aurora to northern Scotland and similar geomagnetic latitudes, where skies are clear."

The aurora borealis happens when large explosions of activity from the Sun throw out huge amounts of charged particles into space. When these particles are captured by the Earth's magnetic field they can collide with gas molecules in the atmosphere. Light is emitted from these collisions at various wavelengths, forming spectacular colourful displays in the sky.

As many people would have noticed, the UK is seeing more aurora activity than usual. Large parts of the country were treated to a spectacular Northern Lights show last year. This rare space weather event is happening more than usual at the moment because we are currently in the peak of the 11-year solar cycle, with high levels of solar activity increasing the chance of the Northern Lights being visible.

According to Met Office aurora forecasts in the Northern Hemisphere, the best time to potentially see the Northern Lights in the UK is around 9pm tonight (February 14), with some areas forecast a 90 per cent
