What to watch this weekend in international sports

A berth in the 2028 Olympic men's volleyball tournament is up for grabs in Moncton, where Canada is among four teams vying to represent the region encompassing North and Central America and the Caribbean at the Los Angeles Games.

The single-elimination bracket gets underway with Canada facing Mexico today at 3:30 p.m. ET. Cuba plays the Dominican Republic at 6 p.m. ET, and the winners square off for the Olympic spot on Saturday at 6 p.m. ET. Watch all of the matches live on CBC Gem and the CBC Sports website.

Canada, at No. 13 in the world, is the highest-ranked of the four teams. Cuba is next at No. 16, followed by No. 23 Mexico and the 45th-ranked Dominican. Last weekend, the Canadians beat Mexico in straight sets in the group stage of their regional championship tournament on the same court in Moncton, then did the same to Cuba in the semifinals before losing the final to the United States.

The U.S. did not continue on to the Olympic qualifier because it receives an automatic berth in the L.A. Games as the host country. The Americans, Canada and Cuba also qualified for next year's men's Volleyball World Cup.

Wheelchair basketball: Canada goes for world title

After dropping 49 points on Japan in the quarterfinals, Kady Dandeneau had 35 points, 11 rebounds and six assists last night to lead the Canadian women's wheelchair basketball team to a 85-73 upset of the reigning world and Paralympic champion Netherlands in the semifinals of the world championship in Ottawa.

Arinn Young added 34 points, 12 rebounds and 13 assists for the Canadians, who will face the United States in the gold-medal game on Saturday at 2:30 p.m. ET on CBC Gem and the CBC Sports website. The Americans lost the 2024 Paralympic final to the Dutch.
