What time is the announcement on the next UK Prime Minister?

The next leader of the country will soon be announced following an eight-week-long Tory leadership contest.

It is now expected that Liz Truss will become Boris Johnson's successor and lead number 10 after leading the polls against rival Rishi Sunak. However, the final results are not set in stone and we will have to wait for Sir Graham Brady to declare the winner.

Conservative party members will have all cast their votes in for the next leader by now since the polls closed on Friday, September 2. Following this, the winner will be announced just after noon today (Monday, September 5). Both candidates and their teams, alongside a sea of party members, will gather at the QEII centre in Westminster where the announcement event will be opened by Conservative Party chairman Andrew Stephenson at around 12.30pm.

Shortly after this, Sir Graham will take the floor to announce the winner and divulge the number of votes each candidate received from their respective party. The event will be public and will be covered by all major news channels live.

Ms Truss and Mr Sunak will be told the results of the contest 10 minutes before it is made publicly available by Sir Graham. After this, the winner will officially become Prime Minister on Tuesday after Mr Johnson travels to Balmoral to inform the Queen that he is resigning.

The new leader will then also meet with her to be asked if they will form a government. Once this is done, the winner will fly back to London to deliver a speech at Downing Street and announce their chosen Cabinet.
