It’s a viewpoint that is gaining increasing traction by the day - Surely Wales have got to come calling for Tommy Reffell. That was precisely the headline in the Leicester Mercury following the flanker’s outstanding display in the Tigers’ eye-catching 29-10 Champions Cup victory away to Clermont Auvergne on Sunday.

The Mercury rugby writers gave him a 9 out of 10 rating and picked him out as their star player, praising his bravery and hailing him as reaching new levels of performance, amid 15 tackles and three crucial turnovers. Leicester supporters also picked him as their Man of the Match, with 41 per cent of the vote, well clear of England star Ellis Genge who was the official choice after the clash at the Parc des Sports Marcel Michelin.

Wales teen scores mesmeric try that has commentators drooling

Regular Tigers watcher Chris Egerton was at the ground commentating for BBC radio and gave his thoughts to WalesOnline, saying: “It was a typical Reffell performance. He’s a natural openside with all that suggests. Quick to the breakdown, so quick the only way you know he has secured the turnover is he’s last up. He’s excellent at securing turnover ball without conceding penalties. The overall package is definitely international quality.”
