What Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag said about Diogo Dalot's miss

Erik ten Hag refused to single out Manchester United defender Diogo Dalot after he missed an open goal in their defeat at West Ham.

Dalot ran onto Bruno Fernandes's defence-splitting pass, knocked the ball past goalkeeper Lukasz Fabianski but larruped the ball high and wide from 10 yards out with the game goalless. Dalot's errant finish typified United's blunt first half performance.

Alejandro Garnacho hit the crossbar and struck wide from a one-on-one, Bruno Fernandes skied a free header, Marcus Rashford wasted a presentable opening and Rasmus Hojlund was denied by Fabianski.

"I can also say Alejandro Garnacho, twice Rasmus Hojlund one time, (Marcus) Rashford, Bruno the header, so it is not fair to pick one of the players out who missed a chance," Ten Hag said. "No, there were so many who missed chances.

"I don't think it's about correcting, it's about giving them the trust. And I believe in my players, that they are capable of doing this.

"So yeah, I trust them and I will encourage them to keep going and do the same things we did over long periods in this game and other games because finally we will go and net and kill and win more games.

"What my players do always and what I do always: first we look in the mirror. What did we do wrong? And the only thing I can criticise the players for is the missed chances. It was the main factor.

"But, then of course, it's clear and obvious - the decision-making by the referee today had a big impact on the score of the game."
