What is The Power of the Dog about and can you watch it on Netflix as movie wins Best Film BAFTA

Anyone who tuned in to the BAFTAs last night will have noticed that (alongside Denis Villeneuve’s sci-fi epic, Dune), one new film seemed to have been nominated over and over again.

The Power of The Dog was nominated for BAFTAs in Cinematography, Adapted Screenplay (the film is based on a novel by Thomas Savage) and Original Score, with Jonny Greenwood (of Radiohead fame) providing a soundtrack that was widely praised.

The cast were also up for awards, with Benedict Cumberbatch nominated for Leading Actor, and both Jesse Plemons and Kodi Smit-Mcphee in the running for Supporting Actor.

Ultimately the film proved successful in two categories, with Jane Campion winning the BAFTA for Direction and the movie also the claiming Best Film award.

The Power of the Dog has also been greeted warmly by the critics. Kevin Maher of The Times gave the film five stars and stated, “Benedict Cumberbatch and Jane Campion, take a bow. The pair have united to deliver an indecently powerful western (the title is a Bible quote) that is a guaranteed frontrunner for the upcoming awards season… What they’ve done here is nothing short of extraordinary.”

The movie is a western set in 1920s Montana, USA. It is mainly driven by the character’s interactions with each other, with Mark Kermode of the BBC saying that “the film is not plot-heavy.”

The official Netflix logline describes it by stating, “Charismatic rancher Phil Burbank inspires fear and awe in those around him. When his brother brings home a new wife and her son, Phil torments them until he finds himself exposed to the possibility of love.”
