What is the latest transfer news with Reading’s John Swift?

Premier League duo Crystal Palace and Newcastle United are continuing to monitor Reading midfielder John Swift ahead of a potential summer move, Football League World understands.

The 26-year-old has been one of the first names on the teamsheet for the Royals this term following an injury-hit 2020/21 campaign, managing to make a much more meaningful impact and recording 11 goals and 13 assists in 38 league appearances with five games left to go this term.

Going off injured against Cardiff City yesterday afternoon, he will be hoping this setback isn’t a serious one with the midfielder free to negotiate terms with other interested sides in the summer, a blow for the Berkshire outfit who look set to see him leave on the expiration of his contract at the end of the campaign.

He reportedly wanted to remain with the second-tier side until the end of the 2021/22 campaign instead of pushing for a January move, though that decision was probably taken so he could have a range of options to choose from in the summer.

Although that was a boost for the Berkshire club in terms of enabling them to utilise him in their bid to escape the drop, it’s something of a financial blow as well with Paul Ince’s side not able to secure any compensation for his services at the end of his contract.

This financial loss for them is a boost for other sides though. Football League World understands Aston Villa, Brentford, Sheffield United, Burnley, Norwich City and Wolverhampton Wanderers have also monitored his situation this term, with Football Insider reporting Leeds United’s interest in his services in the latter stages of 2021.
