What is PSR and FFP? Why Man City have been charged as Premier League hearing begins

Manchester United – and every other club in the English top flight – will be watching on from the sidelines as the Premier League lock horns with Manchester City. In February 2023, the competition charged its champions with 130 alleged breaches of financial regulations.

These include accusations that the club failed to provide accurate financial information and failed to cooperate with investigations spanning nine seasons (2009/10 to 2017/18). Manchester City strongly deny any wrongdoing and the case shall be heard, in private, this month.

Speaking to the BBC last month, Richard Master provided an update on proceedings. When asked whether the case casts a shadow over the competition, the Premier League chief executive said: "It's been going on for a number of years and I think it's self-evident that the case needs to be heard and answered."

He added: "When the case has been heard there will be a decision published and all the questions you would like me to answer will be answered as part of that process."

Then, when asked why the league couldn't be more open and provide timeframe details, Masters replied: "Quite simply, it's not within our rules to be able to do so. What we do is we publish charges when they are made and we publish decisions when they are made. The bit in between is managed by an independent panel and they're very clear that they want that process to be confidential."

As it stands, it remains to be seen exactly when the two parties will battle it out, but ESPN have claimed that the hearing will begin on Monday, September 16. So,
