Millwall remain just four points off of the play-off places with eight games remaining but their progress was stalled considerably by a 2-0 defeat at Stoke City on the cusp of the international break.

The time off the pitch may give the Lions an opportunity to start to look ahead to next season and at players’ contracts at the club.

There are a large number of the current first team squad on deals that expire in the summer with Ryan Leonard, Tom Bradshaw, Murray Wallace and Billy Mitchell being players that the club would be better off for keeping next season.

Benik Afobe also, who missed the defeat at Stoke due to them being his parent club, could be someone the Lions are hoping to bring in on a permanent basis in the summer, with the 29-year-old’s contract with the Potters up in the summer, the break may provide time to discuss his future.

In other news, Junior Tiensia’s loan at Dartford has been cut short due to injury and Joe Wright extended his temporary stay at Cray Wanderers until the end of the season, as confirmed on the club’s website earlier this week.

The Lions have four very winnable home games remaining before the season is out and Gary Rowett will be quietly believing, that if they can win all of them, they can put themselves in a strong position to snatch one of the bottom places in the top six.

There is, of course, Jed Wallace’s contract situation rumbling away in the background, as has been the case for some time, but the forward who turns 28 tomorrow, has been open about exploring other avenues before deciding whether or not to stick around in South London.
