What happened to the five players who were tipped to be Liverpool's 'next generation' in 2015?

Back in 2015, Brendan Rodgers was incredibly excited about the talented players in Liverpool‘s academy setup.

“We have a lot of young players, and if you track their ages then it’s very exciting,” he said at the time. “If they all stay together then it can be a real exciting time here at this club.”

But just who was the Northern Irish manager referring to? Well, when the quote was made, The Mirror had a go at predicting the five players they believed were the focus of Rodgers’ attention and would be Liverpool’s ‘next generation’.

So that begs the all-important question; what happened to that quintet of youngsters?

Well, we’ve taken a look and unfortunately for Liverpool, five success stories have not materialised in the years since…

Big things were expected of Sinclair, but his career has been a real disappointment up until now. The striker played just five games for Liverpool’s first-team before being sold to Watford in 2016. Sinclair didn’t make the grade their either and was instead loaned out to the likes of Birmingham, Sunderland, VVV-Venlo and CSKA Sofia, where goals were also hard to come by for him. The 25-year-old has been a free agent since leaving Watford in 2021.

It was obvious for quite a while that Wilson was never going to be a regular in Liverpool’s starting XI. However, unlike Sinclair, the Welshman has excelled in England’s lower leagues, particularly at Derby County and Bournemouth. Wilson joined Fulham on a permanent basis last summer and he’s been absolutely brilliant for the club in 2021/22.
