According to a report on Wales Online website, the Dragons are looking to bolster their pack with Slabbert seen as an adequate lock replacement for Will Rowlands, who has joined French giants Racing 92.
There were talks that the Dragons were interested in Kobe Steelers lock JD Schickerling but he is too expensive for the Welsh club. The 28-year-old is expected to sign for either the Stormers or a French club.
Therefore, the Dragons have shifted their focus to 23-year-old Slabbert, who featured prominently for Jimmy Stonehouse's charges in their 2022 Currie Cup-winning campaign, as well as proving a stalwart in the current campaign.
Slabbert, standing at 2.00m and 117kg, is an imposing figure in the Pumas second row.
The Dragons had a horror 2022/23 URC campaign, finishing 15th with just four wins from 18 games.
