Welsh Labour leadership Live: Vaughan Gething wins contest to succeed Mark Drakeford

Vaughan Gething has won the contest to be the next Welsh Labour leader. The son of a Welsh vet and a woman from Zambia, the Cardiff South and Penarth MS is now set to be Wales' first black leader.

Labour leader Keir Starmer congratulated Mr Gething, saying his appointment as the UK's first black leader will be "an historic moment that speaks to the progress and values of modern-day Wales".

Some 18,000 Labour party members in Wales as well as around 100,000 members of affiiliated trade unions were able to vote in the contest to succeed Mark Drakeford. Mr Gething, the current economy minister, defeated Jeremy Miles, the current education minister by 51.7% of the vote to 48.3%. Turnout among the membership of Labour in Wales was 57.8% while 9.4% of eligible trade union members voted.

Cardiff West MS Mark Drakeford will stand down as First Minister on Tuesday, paving the way for his successor as Welsh Labour leader to be elected as the next leader of the devolved government providing he can win the support of the Senedd. As Labour only has half the seats in the Senedd, they are likely to need at least one AM from an opposition group to abstain or support them.
