We tried the chippy hailed best in the UK and it's right here in Greater Manchester
It doesn't take much to encourage a chippy tea in our house.
Bit of decorating? Chippy tea. Parents evening? Chippy tea. It's Friday, why the hell not? Friday chippy tea.
So when we heard that a fish and chip shop right here in Greater Manchester had been hailed the best in the UK, well, no excuse needed, chippy tea all round.
After visiting a whopping 120 chip shops on his mission to discover the nation's best chippies, it's Green Lane Chippy in Leigh, Wigan, that Stephen Peel has put at the top of his list.
Throughout his Chippy Tour, Stephen has been grading each chippy out of five, taking into account factors such as customer service, cleanliness, presentation, and of course, the quality of the food itself.
To score a five, the 62-year-old fish and chip superfan, from Warrington, said it has to be 'that good' people won't be disappointed if they travel to visit it.
I didn't have to travel very far, so, while the chippy does have a restaurant you can eat in - a very popular one at that - I was taking ours away to eat at home.
When I first arrived, the queue was out of the door. But while it could well be considered a result of the publicity Stephen's review has given this place, as one staff member told a customer 'it's always like this'.
With a whole wall displaying almost a dozen Good Food Award certificates, this place is no stranger to accolades.
Everything seemed clean and in its latest inspection in February the place was given a 'good' 4 food hygiene rating out of 5.
