'We thought someone was getting blown up': Terrified residents describe how explosion tore through neighbourhood

Neighbours have been left shaken after a 'gas explosion' blew out the windows and a door of a terraced house in east Manchester.

The property in Coatbridge Street, Clayton was damaged extensively in the explosion which prompted a huge emergency service response on Friday evening (September 13). An air ambulance landed nearby, but it is not clear if anyone was taken to hospital in it.

The Manchester Evening News understands a man was injured in the explosion, but eyewitnesses said they saw him walking outside the property following the incident which occurred shortly before 6.30pm. A woman appeared to escape unharmed from the house.

Several windows were missing at the front of the property with pieces of glass scattered on the street and some cars also said to be damaged. Images of the back of the house suggest a window and a door were also damaged with cracks in the corner of the building.

One neighbour, who asked to remain anonymous, said the explosion was 'absolutely terrifying'. She said: "Everyone heard it and felt it.

"We thought someone was getting blown up. We felt it, it proper rocked you. It was absolutely terrifying. You just didn't know what's exploded.

"It wasn't a gunshot or a car crash. Lots of cars got damaged as well."

Eyewitnesses say that Schofield Street was closed for some time following the explosion while an air ambulance landed nearby. A police
