'We're killing the product' - Pep Guardiola fears echoed by PFA chief

Professional Footballers' Association boss Maheta Molango has warned that the sport's busy schedule is "killing the product" and causing worries about player welfare.

Molango echoed the thoughts of many managers in both men's and women's football, using Kevin De Bruyne's injury during Manchester City's 2023 Champions League final win as an example.

This follows recent remarks by England manager Sarina Wiegman, who called on governing bodies to find a better balance to give players enough rest time.

Speaking at the Financial Times Business of Football Summit, Molango said: "(De Bruyne going off) is surely not what we want to see. The Champions League final is supposed to be our Super Bowl."

"It wasn't because one of the best players in the world, De Bruyne, was out in the 30th minute; (Erling) Haaland was exhausted; Rodri, who is a top athlete, said after 60 minutes he had cramps."

"For us, we've reached a stage where it is not just about the health of the player, it is about us killing the product."

City boss Pep Guardiola has regularly voiced his concerns about players' workload and the amount of games they are expected to play. City ended up playing xxx games last season as they won the Treble.

"Only they - the players - can change something - not just in the Premier League, everywhere," the Spaniard said.

"I've said many times we have too many games. The problem is we have just three weeks' holiday in the summer and it is impossible to regenerate. Just look at the number of injuries at all the teams.
