‘Chairman’ Marks 50th Anniversary As Player, Captain Of Rangers

Enugu State Governor, Peter Ndubuisi Mbah, yesterday, paid tribute to former Super Eagles coach, Christian Chukwu, MFR, who marked his 50th anniversary as player and captain of Rangers International Football Club, Enugu.

During a novelty match played at Nnamdi Azikiwe Stadium, Enugu, Governor Mbah, who was represented by his Deputy, Ifeanyi Ossai, said: “This is a celebration of an illustrious career remembering Christian Chukwu’s exceptional days as player, captain of Rangers and captain of Nigeria’s national team. He was the first Nigerian captain to lift the AFCON trophy after a historic victory over Algeria in the final in 1980,” he said.

Beyond the excitement of the novelty match, the event, yesterday, in Enugu provided an opportunity to honour Chukwu’s off-field contributions as a coach, mentor, and ambassador for the sport.

Mbah said: “Chukwu’s commitment to youth development and grassroots football initiatives have helped shape the future of Nigerian football and nurture the next generation of talent. Thankful to God for the gift of talent, this novelty match played in honour of the football legend also marked the Golden Jubilee of Christian Chukwu’s career with Enugu Rangers. I pray for God’s continued blessings on him,” the Governor said.
