'We don’t yet have all of the answers' admit rail boss ahead of months of bridge project disruption

Rail bosses say they "don't yet have all the answers" regarding public transport alternatives during a huge 16 million bridge replacement project that will cause months worth of chaos in Stockport.

Work on the Greek Street Bridge, which crosses the West Coast Mainline in Edgeley, near Stockport station, is to begin this Christmas. The roundabout and surrounding roads will then be closed for an entire year from March next year. Whilst no trains will run through Stockport for 21 days next August.

Network Rail say the 'extremely complex' task will cause "signficiant disruption." However they say the current bridge, which was built in 1958, has "reached the end of its life" and that replacing it is "essential."

They are holding a drop-in session for local residents where they will be joined by representatives from Network Rail, Stockport Council and the contractor, Murphy.

Ahead of the event, on Tuesday 3 December, William Brandon, Network Rail project manager said: “We’re inviting people to find out more about the essential work to replace the Greek Street bridge, as part of our commitment to keep the Stockport community informed during our project. This work is extremely complex. Its construction and its impact on the people of Stockport is being carefully planned.

“We understand the essential work will cause significant disruption to the local area. We don’t yet have all of the answers about public transport alternatives during the project, but we want to make sure the community is brought along on the journey from the earliest stage possible.
