'We are ready' - Nemanja Matic gives verdict on Manchester United title challenge next season

Midfielder Nemanja Matic has remained coy on Manchester United’s chances of a title push next season.

United are on course to finish outside the Champions League spots this season with the club four points off fourth-placed Arsenal having played a game more. A number of players have been subjected to fierce criticism in recent weeks, with United captain Harry Maguire booed by England fans at Wembley on Tuesday night.

Nevertheless, Matic is confident in the current dressing room, claiming the squad has plenty of potential moving forward. However, the 33-year-old was hesitant about whether the club could mount a title challenge next season.

When asked by talkSPORT about how far United are away from being a title-winning side, he said: “That's a hard question. In football, I've seen so many things, everything can change in one month.

“Let's see how the group will look next season and what will happen. In football, you cannot predict anything.

“I am confident that this changing room has a lot of good players and good characters. There is big potential.”

The former Serbia international has started just 10 Premier League games this season as United now begin to look for younger midfielders to take them forward. That said, Matic’s experience will have been invaluable to the squad.

Matic won two Premier League titles earlier in his career at Chelsea, though he remained cautious about his chances of winning one at Old Trafford, despite admitting there is a hunger within the squad. He added: “We are ready. I see everyone is motivated to do the best for this club. No one is here that wants to do bad.
