Wayne Rooney sends message to his Derby County players after latest setback

Wayne Rooney insists his Derby County side need to move on quickly after their defeat at Luton Town yesterday.

The Rams fell to a 1-0 loss at Kenilworth Road, a result which leaves the side eight points from safety and they’ve been leapfrogged by Barnsley as well.

So, Rooney’s men face a major battle to stay in the Championship, but they do have a chance to respond quickly as they take on Cardiff City in the week.

And, speaking to Derbyshire Live, the boss made it clear that they can’t dwell on the narrow setback against the Hatters.

“I’m frustrated, to be honest. On the day, if we take one of our chances we win the game but unfortunately we have lost it on a sloppy goal. We have to get over this. We have to keep working, keep fighting, we have got another tough game Tuesday.”

Derby will be hoping to end a poor away record when they make the trip to Wales on Tuesday, having lost their last four in a row on their travels.

The verdict

This is the right attitude from Rooney as he knows how important it is for his side to focus on the next challenge, with the fixtures coming regularly in the Championship.

Obviously, looking at the table shows the huge task they have to stay up but the Manchester United legend will be reminding his team that they’ve defied the odds to even have a chance of staying up.

So, the Luton loss was a tough one but it’s all about Cardiff now, with Derby certainly capable of getting a result against the Bluebirds if they perform to their best.
