Wayne Rooney makes pledge to Derby County supporters regarding his future

Wayne Rooney has insisted to Derby County fans that he wants to be the man to take the Rams forward into the future as manager.

But he has also called on the club’s administrators to enter discussions into how he can carry on as the man in the dugout and has urged them to secure a takeover as soon as possible.

Rooney guided a thread-bare Rams squad to the brink of escaping the relegation zone weeks ago, despite a 21-point deduction this season, but three defeats on the spin has seen Barnsley leapfrog them in the Championship table.

The former England international player has shown major loyalty to County despite their struggles, turning down an interview from boyhood club Everton for their managerial vacancy last month.

With a takeover of the club not looking to be imminent though with no preferred bidder named, despite offer being in and carefully considered by Quantuma, Rooney is keen to continue his stint as Derby manager no matter what the outcome is of the club’s relegation battle.

“I’ve been at this club for three seasons now and love the fans, the staff and the players,” Rooney said, per the club’s official Twitter account.

“I want the club to move forwards and to be the person that does that.

“There need to be discussions on how I can do that and that’s why we need a new owner, as we all know.”

The Verdict

It would be a real blow if Rooney wasn’t to stay around next season but he sounds incredibly committed to the cause from his latest comments.

That will be music to the ears of supporters who are desperate for him to remain at the helm, but if a takeover doesn’t get sorted soon that would seem a very unlikely scenario.
