Wayne Rooney makes former Man Utd wonderkid his first signing for DC United

Wayne Rooney’s DC United have signed former Manchester United wonderkid Ravel Morrison on a free transfer.

Old Trafford legend and England record goalkeeper Rooney was appointed manager of MLS side DC United earlier this month.

Rooney, who had a spell at DC United as a player, left his job with Derby County last month, having spent two seasons in charge at Pride Park.

One of Rooney’s first decisions as DC United manager was to target a move for ex-Manchester United starlet Morrison.

Morrison joined the Premier League club’s academy in 2009 and was rated by many at Old Trafford as a potential superstar.

According to United legend Rio Ferdinand, former manager Sir Alex Ferguson rated Morrison as the ‘best player he had seen at that age’.

But despite his talent and promise, Morrison only made three appearances for Manchester United before being sold in 2012.

Turbulent spells at various English and European clubs followed and Morrison will now hope to revive his career under a familiar face at DC United.

‘Wayne worked closely with Ravel during his time as manager of Derby County,’ DC United president Dave Kasper said. ‘Ravel is an incredible talent and his ability to create and score goals is impressive.

‘He has played at the highest levels during his career and his vision, creativity and ability on the ball will be a huge asset for us.’

The MLS club’s general manager, Lucy Rushton, added: ‘Ravel is a dynamic and exciting player who has experience performing at the elite levels in Europe and Mexico.

‘He is a top-class midfielder with excellent technical ability and positional versatility. His game intelligence and all-round attacking ability allow him to fit perfectly in the system and style that Wayne wants to play.
