Wayne Rooney & David Beckham nearly had England dressing room fight in 2005

Wayne Rooney and David Beckham are two of England’s greatest ever players, of that there is no doubt whatsoever.

The superstar duo – who both enjoyed hugely successful stints with Manchester United as well – played over 100 times for the Three Lions and each of them captained the nation at major tournaments.

Rooney is also England’s record goalscorer with 53 from his 120 appearances on the international stage, although Harry Kane will likely surpass him in the next year or so.

Beckham produced a number of magical moments for his country, including THAT free-kick against Greece and a match-winning penalty versus Argentina at the 2002 World Cup.

Rooney and Beckham played alongside each other for a number of years after the former burst onto the scene as a teenager in the early 2000s.

They didn’t always see eye-to-eye on England duty, though.

Back in 2005 when the team suffered a shock defeat in a 2006 World Cup qualifier away at Northern Ireland, Rooney and Beckham almost came to blows in the dressing room.

And it was due to the fact that Rooney – who’s well-known for having a bit of a temper on him – insulted his captain by labelling him a “flash b****rd” as they headed up the tunnel.

After the newly-appointed DC United manager committed a string of silly fouls in the first half, he was was ordered to calm down by Beckham.

Rooney responded on the pitch by telling his teammate to “f**k off”, before continuing his fiery tirade after the whistle was blown to signal half-time.

A source told The Guardian at the time: “When the England players were going up the tunnel at half-time, Rooney said something about Beckham being a ‘flash b****rd’ behind his back, which Beckham heard.
