Watford in the EFL: How is Almen Abdi getting on these days?

Almen Abdi definitely proved to be one of the more successful Watford signings in the Pozzo era.

Affectionally nicknamed ‘the professor’, Abdi quickly became a fan favourite at Vicarage Road during his four years there, and went on to play a big part in the club’s promotion to the Premier League.

The former Swiss international joined Watford on-loan from Udinese in the summer of 2012 – the same summer the Hertfordshire club were taken over by the Pozzo family, who also own Udinese.

The attacking midfielder was an instant hit, scoring 12 goals and registering nine assists in 39 Championship appearances, as the Hornets just fell short of promotion to the Premier League, losing 1-0 to Crystal Palace in the play-off final.

After winning the club’s player of the year award that summer, Abdi signed permanently, but his 2013/14 season was plagued with injuries, making just 13 appearances for the Hornets as they ended up 13th in what was a disappointing campaign.

The following season though, Abdi was able to stay relatively fit, helping Watford to achieve promotion to the Premier League by chipping in with nine goals and two assists in his 32 league appearances.

Abdi also featured heavily in Watford’s top-flight survival the following season, playing 32 matches on the right hand side of a 4-4-2 under Quique Sanchez Flores.

But how did Abdi get on after leaving the club?

His Hornets tenure came to an end after that first season in the Premier League, signing for Sheffield Wednesday in the 2016 summer transfer window.

However, Abdi was plagued by injuries during his time in Yorkshire, and Owls fans never got to see the best of the playmaker.

He went on to leave the club at the end of the 2018/19 season having made just 23 club
