Watford goalkeeper Daniel Bachmann responds to Manchester United transfer interest

Watford goalkeeper Daniel Bachmann has responded to Manchester United's interest in him.

The 27-year-old Austrian joined the Hertfordshire club in 2019 from Kilmarnock and has played second fiddle to Ben Foster during Watford's relegation season. Despite being second choice, Bachmann did make 12 appearances for Roy Hodgson's men this season.

MEN Sport reported on Friday that Bachmann was one of two options United were considering signing to replace Dean Henderson who is likely to leave for Newcastle. Karl Darlow, who currently plays for the north east side, has also been considered.

Due to David de Gea's form, Bachmann would likely be second choice in Manchester but he told Austrian publication Krone that it is an 'honour' to be linked with the Old Trafford club. He said: "There was contact, it wasn't out of thin air.

"I don't know if the team boss [Rangnick] has a say in the transfers. Hey, it’s Manchester United, a huge honour if a club like that is interested in you."

Any potential move for Bachmann could be scuppered now after Rangnick, who is the head coach of the Austrian national team, left Old Trafford on Sunday. The 27-year-old did also add that he was happy at Vicarage Road despite relegation.

"I'm happy at Watford," Bachmann added. "Have a contract until 2024, now [it is] only in my head that we'll be promoted again immediately. Everything else is not in my hands."
