WATCH | TV pundits slam decision to disallow Etzebeth try: 'Rubbish, pathetic call'

SuperSport rugby pundits Swys de Bruin and Jonathan Mokuena believe Springbok lock Eben Etzebeth was unlucky to have a try disallowed against Argentina at Kings Park over the weekend.

Etzebeth went over after a driving maul in the 10th minute, before the try was cancelled upon review of the television match official (TMO).

The officials determined that Etzebeth was in an off-side position, having been in front of skipper Siya Kolisi when he took the ball forward before dotting down.

However, replays appeared to suggest that Etzebeth never let go of the ball. This means it was not a "truck and trailer" scenario.

But Australian referee Damon Murphy and TMO Chris Hart from New Zealand determined otherwise.

Speaking on SuperSport's Final Whistle programme, De Bruin and Mokuena were in agreement that the try should have been awarded.

"Eben, not for one second, took his hands off the ball. The TMO said obstruction... it's a terrible, pathetic call. That is a try," De Bruin said.

Mokuena added that Etzebeth had kept his hands on the ball throughout: "Like Swys says, it was a rubbish call from the referee."

Despite the early setback, the Springboks won the Test 38-21.
