WATCH | Handre Pollard returns to Boks, Koch sits out training with strapped knee

In Paris

Springbok flyhalf Handre Pollard made his long-awaited appearance at the Rugby World Cup when he joined the team's Tuesday's training session at the Stade des Fauvettes in the north of Paris.

Pollard didn't make the initial 33-man cut on 8 August because of a calf injury, but he has returned to fitness since and played off the bench in Friday's Premiership Cup game for the Leicester Tigers against the Sale Sharks, after which he was called up by the Springboks as Malcolm Marx's replacement.

Marx injured his knee during last week Wednesday's training session.

Pollard was formally announced as Marx's replacement on Sunday after South Africa's 76-0 win against Romania.

He joined the squad on Monday and stepped onto the field in cool and blustery conditions in the north of Paris.

Pollard, who was training with the Springbok squad in the process of returning to fitness, hasn't played a Test since August last year against Australia in Adelaide. 

He sustained a knee injury during that match, which he recovered from, only for a calf injury in May to rule him out of initial World Cup selection, altough he was named on the team's standby list.

National director of rugby Rassie Erasmus said Pollard won't be in selection contention for Saturday's game against Ireland as he needs to get up to speed with the team's intensity.

Versatile prop Vincent Koch was also with the team but was in training shoes and sported a strapped-up knee.
