Watch: Frenkie de Jong sends message to Man Utd’s Erik ten Hag

Barcelona midfielder Frenkie de Jong has sent a good luck message to incoming Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag.

De Jong, who came through the Ajax academy, established himself as a first-team regular following Ten Hag’s arrival in Amsterdam in December 2017.

The Netherlands international made 59 appearances in all competitions under the manager, winning one Eredivisie title and the KNVB Cup.

He also played a key role in Ajax’s iconic run to the Champions League semi-finals in 2018-19 but left for Barcelona a few weeks later.

After three years at Camp Nou, the midfielder is now being linked with a move away and could reunite with Ten Hag at Old Trafford. Barcelona are reportedly asking United to pay around €80million for De Jong as they look to balance their finances.

“We haven’t made any decisions regarding the squad; Frenkie is a quality player, very important,” Barcelona director Mateu Alemany said recently.

“We are conditioned by [financial] fair play, conditioned by the situation inherited by the club. We must be patient. We are clear that we are going to reinforce the team. It is necessary and we want to compete for the titles next year.”

De Jong reportedly wants to move to a club playing Champions League football next season but is clearly a big fan of his former manager.

Alongside the likes of Edwin van der Sar, Daley Blind, Antony, Jurrien Timber, Matthijs de Ligt and many others, he recently sent a video message to Ten Hag.

“Hi trainer,” De Jong said. “It was a great time, in which you have shown results with attractive football. You have proven yourself as a top trainer and you’ve deserved this step.

“I want to wish you good luck and the best regards.”
