WATCH | 'Enough is enough' - The night Real Madrid stood with Vinicius Jr in racism row

In a show of solidarity with Vinicius Junior, Real Madrid players wearing the No 20 shirt of their Brazilian teammate lined up with their backs to the stands on the Santiago Bernabeu pitch on Wednesday before their match against Rayo Vallecano kicked off.

It was Real Madrid's first match since the latest case of racial abuse against Vinicius, when the 22-year-old was subjected to insults by Valencia fans on Sunday.

In the 20th minute, fans chanted his name as Vinicius, who sat out the match which Real Madrid won 2-1 with what the club said was a minor knee injury, watched on from the stands.

The winger came out briefly before the match to salute the Madrid fans.

A great big banner in the stands behind goal read: "Vinicius somos todos. Busta ya", which translates to "We are all Vinicius. Enough is enough."

Real Madrid's women's football and basketball players also came out with shirts displaying the No 20 on their in their games on Wednesday. 

Spanish football's competition committee have punished Valencia by ordering the partial closure of the Mestalla Stadium for five games and issued a fine of €45 000 (about R931 000) in what is considered the strongest action taken against racism in football in Spain.

The particular section of the stands, behind goal, is reportedly where the racism came from on Sunday and where so-called hardcore home fans can usually be found on match days.
