Watch: Edouard Mendy denies Mane with unbelievable double save
Chelsea goalkeeper Edouard Mendy made an incredible double save to deny his Senegal team-mate Sadio Mane in the Carabao Cup final at Wembley.
The first half of the cup final between Chelsea and Liverpool was goalless but there was no shortage of chances, with Christian Pulisic and Mason Mount spurning good opportunities to score for Thomas Tuchel’s side.
Liverpool dominated in terms of possession and territory, while they found themselves unable to break the deadlock. January recruit Luis Diaz had a lively opening 45 minutes alongside stalwarts Mane and Mohamed Salah, but they couldn’t find a way past Mendy.
By far the best and brightest moment for Liverpool when Naby Keita struck a long-range effort at goal. It was well-saved by Mendy, but the ball spilled out to give Mane a glorious opportunity to strike at goal.
It looked for all the world in that moment like Liverpool had their opener, with the recent AFCON champion given all the time and space in the world to follow it up.
Mane struck well and confidently, but the ball rebounded away, leaving all those inside Wembley and watching at home wondering how on earth it didn’t burst the back of the net.
Subsequent replays showed that Mendy had done astonishingly well to get up off the floor and get his body in the way of Mane’s shot from point-blank range.
