Wales' World Cup play off matches in doubt as Ukrainian FA asks for postponement

Wales' World Cup play off matches, scheduled to take place at the end of this month, could be in doubt as the Ukrainian Football Association have requested that their match against Scotland be postponed due to the Russian invasion of their country.

The winner of the play off match between Scotland and Ukraine will face the winner of the Wales v Austria game, if UEFA agrees to the postponement then it is believed to be highly likely they will reschedule the Wales v Austria game also.

With European football's governing body almost certain to accede to the request by the Ukrainian FA, the matches could be re-arranged to take place in the June international window- with Wales scheduled to start their UEFA Nations League campaign.

Tickets for both Wales matches, due to take place on March 24 and March 29, are now sold out as Robert Page's side have probably the best opportunity to reach a World Cup since losing a play off against Russia in 2003.

Football Association of Wales (FAW) CEO Noel Mooney says although he is expecting a postponement, nothing has been decided as yet.

Mooney told BBC Wales' Breakfast programme: "We are planning to play against Austria on the 24th of March in Cardiff City stadium.

"I spoke to [Wales manager] Rob Page for example yesterday, we're all set for that.

"But then the news came through yesterday about Ukraine requesting a postponement of the match to June, so we've written to Fifa and to Uefa yesterday and we wrote to the other associations involved to say we should meet as soon as possible, early next week, to discuss how this would work because we've got a plethora of Nations League games of course in June.
