Wales Six Nations squad announcement live as Warren Gatland names first squad since returning

Warren Gatland will today name his Wales squad for the 2023 Six Nations in what is his first selection since returning to the head coach hot-seat.

Having left the role in 2019, Gatland returned in December to take the reins from axed Wayne Pivac following a disastrous autumn campaign which included a shock home defeat to Georgia.

A good Six Nations start on February 4 against an Ireland side many will be tipping to win the tournament will be vital in setting the tone for the Kiwi's second stint in charge. As such, there is no shortage of intrigue around this announcement, with Gatland having to navigate several key considerations.

One of the biggest calls is who to install as captain, with a number of strong candidates putting up their hands. Justin Tipuric and Dan Biggar have led Wales over the past two campaigns, and the latter could well be called upon again although having to return to Toulon during fallow weeks may count against him. Adam Beard, Jac Morgan, Dewi Lake, Ken Owens and, of course, Alun Wyn Jones, could also have a case.

In terms of the party itself, Gatland will have likely had a pretty good idea on who to include, but a couple of players may well have come into contention in recent weeks, with the likes of Owen Williams and Sam Wainwright putting their hands up for inclusion. Meanwhile, Ospreys centre Keiran Williams is among the hopefuls gunning for their first international cap.

Gatland will name his Wales squad around noon before facing the media at a press conference later this afternoon to explain his selection decisions. As ever, you can follow all the build-up and live updates right here on our live blog.
