Wales 1-2 Netherlands: Weghorst scores dramatic injury-time winner in Nations League contest

Wales' unbeaten home record under Rob Page was ended as they were defeated 2-1 by Netherlands in the Nations League.

Joe Allen, Wayne Hennessey, Kieffer Moore, Aaron Ramsey and Neco Williams were all left out of the squad following their monumental efforts in the World Cup play-off final win over Ukraine three days earlier. The hosts had the better chances in the first-half but fell behind to Teun Koopmeiners' driven strike early on in the second-half. Rhys Norrington-Davies looked to have rescued a point for the hosts with his first international goal in injury-time. But Wout Weghorst headed home a minute later to seal a dramatic win for the visitors as Wales' run of 19 home matches without defeat was ended.

The bigger picture was clear following Wales' remarkable night against Ukraine. Both sides had a rather unfamiliar look, with van Gaal changing the entire starting 11 from his side's 4-1 win in Belgium on Friday. And it was Wales who survived an early scare as Joe Rodon's loose pass was intercepted, although Koopmeiners' shot from the resulting attack was well blocked.

The visitors enjoyed plenty of possession, but with pace in abundance, Wales carried a threat themselves and they created two chances from unlikely avenues. Harry Wilson headed Daniel James' corner wide before Mepham's inch-perfect cross was headed over by the lively Norrington-Davies.
