Veteran coach Steve Komphela back at Golden Arrows with another rescue job required

Steve Komphela will be back in the DStv Premiership dugout less than a month since parting ways with Moroka Swallows, after Golden Arrows confirmed his appointment as head coach on Thursday.

After seven months at the Dube Birds, the Soweto giants went through a tumultuous period in December and January during which the Premier Soccer League fined the club for missing two DStv Premiership matches.

Komphela was sidelined - he had different opinions to the Swallows' management about the running of the club's administrative issues - and ultimately opted to leave.

The football fraternity was already predicting that he'd be back in the head coaching saddle sooner rather than later, with Arrows expected to be his next destination.

The 56-year-old is no stranger to the Backheel Boys and returns four years after exiting the club.

Komphela pulled off a rescue mission at the KwaZulu-Natal outfit during the 2019/20 season, arriving when the club was facing relegation and finishing the campaign in 10th place, much to the club owners' and fans' relief.

Once again, he is expected to do the same.

Arrows last tasted victory in late October against Kaizer Chiefs and have suffered eleven straight defeats as they continue to drop into the nether regions of the log standings where they are currently in 12th position with 23 points.

Komphela's reign starts on Sunday with a tricky away tie to ninth-place Polokwane City.

Kick-off is at 15:00.
