"Very surprised" - Journalist drops intriguing claim as Aston Villa line up moves for £110m duo

Journalist Dean Jones expects Aston Villa to sign either Leeds United’s Kalvin Phillips or Brighton’s Yves Bissouma this summer.

The two midfielders have been linked with moves to Villa Park, but Jones would be surprised if Steven Gerrard ended up getting his hands on both.

According to The Telegraph, Villa will push to sign Phillips from Leeds in a potential £60m deal when the transfer window reopens.

The same outlet states that Gerrard could also make a move for Bissouma, who he targeted back in January.

As per Sky Sports, Brighton wanted up to £50m for the Mali international as they looked to fend off the interest being shown in him.

Bissouma’s contract expires next year, so you suspect that number could be about to drop in a boost to Villa.

But with the Villans now seemingly willing to spend over £50m on a new midfielder, Brighton’s original valuation may not be a problem anyway.

While Jones can see Villa targeting both Phillips and Bissouma, he expects it to be one or the other for them.

Speaking to GIVEMESPORT, the transfer insider said: “I think they’ll go for both players, but I only expect them to sign one. I’ll be very surprised if they got both of those players through the door.”

The easier deal here is probably Bissouma. As already mentioned, he is approaching the final year of his contract at the Amex, so Brighton could be forced to sell to avoid losing him on a free transfer in the future.

Phillips, in contrast, will still have another year on his, while the England international signing fresh terms at Elland Road does not seem to be off the table.
