'VAR' system on horizon for GAA after preliminary talks

A GAA version of VAR might be on the way for Gaelic games after discussions were had at board level regarding the possible introduction of a Television Match Official (TMO) for football and hurling.

Meetings of An Coiste Bainistíochta and Ard Chomhairle took place in recent days where "a preliminary report on the use of a TMO was discussed".

The GAA brought in HawkEye technology back in 2013 to help avoid mistakes involving the awarding (or disallowing) of points in both football or hurling that can be difficult for umpires to call confidently.

It may come to pass that a TMO system is the next logical step to help match officials police some of the more challenging aspects of our national games.

The use of a TMO has been well established in rugby for some years while the still relatively recent introduction of VAR in the game of soccer has had its fair share of detractors.

One other significant development to come out of this week's boardroom talks saw delegates reach an agreement to submit a motion to Congress so that a player ordered off in normal time may not be replaced and that yellow cards shall carry over into extra time.
