VAR check shows Edinson Cavani was onside for Manchester United’s winning goal vs West Ham

Manchester United left it late to beat West Ham as Marcus Rashford’s injury-time goal sealed a 1-0 victory at Old Trafford.

United appeared on course for a stalemate against their top-four rivals as they struggled to break down a well-organised West Ham side.

But the breakthrough came with just seconds to spare as Anthony Martial played in Edinson Cavani, who squared the ball across goal for Rashford to tap in from close range.

West Ham fans were confused as a VAR replay was not shown before the final whistle was blown.

But the Premier League has subsequently released an image from the VAR check which shows that Cavani was onside when he received the ball from Martial.

The win puts United into fourth in the Premier League, one point clear of West Ham while David Moyes’ side have also played one game more.

‘It is obviously an important goal and such late on is an amazing feeling. We have to use that winning feeling,’ Rashford told BBC Sport after United’s win.

‘We could have been a bit better on the ball but managed to get the goal we needed and can use that as motivation now.

‘When there are two teams so close together in the table, both are fighting to be in front of one another and today we managed to get there. We are sitting fourth now, some teams have games to play, but it is nice to be in that position.
