Van Dijk blasts ex-players who 'try to get us down'

Virgil van Dijk hit out at ex-football players who "try and get us down" after Liverpool's 2-1 win over Ajax in their Champions League tie in Anfield. The Liverpool defender told BT Sport: "Yeah, not listening to the outside world, that's the most important thing. "It's funny sometimes you know because there is a lot of ex-football players who know exactly what we go through but they say a lot of things to try and get us down. "We know that last week was unacceptable, very bad and we try to make it right. "This is what I said before, it is a step in the right direction but we cannot get carried away because we play so many games. Now it is time to focus on the national teams or to get a break for a little bit and crack on."

Jurgen Klopp praised Liverpool for taking a first step forward after a difficult start to the season but expressed his frustration at the club's enforced period without a match now. Klopp told BT Sport: "It was a nice celebration. I am sure it showed pretty much everything that the boys thought today - but nothing is over, either negative or positive. "It is a first step, a very important step for us and now we have a strange break, pretty long. "The players come only back (after international duty) Wednesday or Thursday for the (Brighton) game we have. We have to hope and pray the boys come back healthy and we can train with the other properly because Brighton is waiting."
