US election 2024 results LIVE: Georgia, Pennsylvania and North Carolina counting as Trump sees early surge

The first results in the US election have been declared as polling stations begin to close across the country.

Tens of millions of people across the USA cast their vote on Tuesday in what is set to be an extremely tight presidential election.

The country is deciding between Democrat Kamala Harris and Republican Donald Trump - with the result of the election set to have a huge impact both domestically and internationally.

Polling stations started to close at midnight with the first projected results for both candidates announced shortly afterwards. However none of the battleground states of Pennsylvania, Arizona, Nevada, North Carolina, Georgia, Wisconsin and Michigan have yet been declared.

Ahead of election day, more than 77 million people had already voted. The election, which uses the electoral college system, is expected to be decided by razor-thin margins with the final result not expected to be known for several days.

It is like that it will come down to who wins in the seven key swing states - with Pennsylvania seen as the top prize. A victory there would clear a path to White House for either candidate.

Polls started to close at around midnight UK time, and we should start to get results and a projection of where things may end up over night.
