United States in total control at Presidents Cup

The United States look set to continue their Presidents Cup dominance after completing a 5-0 whitewash over the International team in the opening fourballs.

The Americans have been victorious the last nine editions of the biennial contest – the International side have won just once in 14 attempts – and Jim Furyk's side romped into a commanding lead at Royal Montreal Golf Club in Quebec.

Tony Finau and Xander Schauffele were one-up winners over Byeong Hun An and Jason Day in the top game, with Collin Morikawa and Sahith Theegala winning by the same margin against Min Woo Lee and Adam Scott in game two.

Any hopes Mike Weir’s side had of utilising home advantage to improve their miserable record in the event soon evaporated as Russell Henley and Scottie Scheffler cruised to a 3&2 victory over Sungjae Im and Tom Kim.

Christiaan Bezuidenhout and Taylor Pendrith took Wyndham Clark and Keegan Bradley to the final hole but paid for South African Bezuidenhout spurning three birdie putts to win holes from inside 10 feet on the back nine as the Americans held firm for a one-up victory.

Hideki Matsuyama and Corey Conners led over the first four holes against Patrick Cantlay and Sam Burns but the US turned the tide to win 2&1.
